The horse track: It’s an excuse to get dolled up, soak up some sun, sip on a few cocktails and dabble in a little harmless betting. As a competitive person who loves fashion and enjoying some fresh air fun, I’m surprised I haven’t done this sooner.
Thanks to my friends at America’s Best Racing, I won’t be deprived any longer. They let Peter and I get a little taste of the action at a watch party in the city a few months back, but last weekend they actually invited us out to the Belmont track. Yes, that Belmont track, the home of the third Triple Crown race (Dammit California Chrome).
When we got there, we immediately went down to the paddock. There we got to assess the horses up close, and watch the owners and trainers speak with their jockeys before each race.
Just another casual afternoon at the Belmont, with Bobby Flay and his horses…
After seeing the horses up close and personal, we headed into the track to watch the races. I was a passive observer for the first few before deciding to try my luck at some betting.
I’ll be honest, I started out fairly basic. I like the name of this horse. $5 on him to win. I quickly learned that this was not the most lucrative strategy, and asked for an analytic crash course. The folks at America’s Best Racing were fantastic. They taught us the different ways to bet, how to analyze each horse’s stats, and even what to look for when you see each horse up close.
Once I got the hang of it I started to see how people can get really into this! We even netted a profit by the end of the day.
After full submersion into the horse racing scene, I have an even better appreciation for the centuries old tradition. It’s not just a place to make a fashion statement (although I love that aspect of it…), it’s an experience. One that I hope to partake in many more Saturdays in my future.
But since fashion IS an important part of this tradition, let’s share what I wore…
Have you been out to the race track before? What’s your favorite part?
