Confession: in high school, I worked for Buckle. I know, those were some darker sartorial times… Almost every paycheck would funnel right back to the store, in exchange for lots and lots of Lucky and BKE jeans. I’d come home with dark jeans and light jeans and flaired jeans and ripped jeans…and my mom (and grandma especially) never quite understood why I’d pay the most for the ones that already had holes in them. Fast forward 10 years, and the distressed denim look has resurfaced. Yes I bought some again, and yes Mom, I paid more for them.
This time around, you can play the ripped jeans card one of two ways: boyfriend or skinny. As I mentioned in this post, I love the boyfriend jean look on others, but I can’t quite find a pair that works for my 5’4 curvy frame. For me, distressed skinnies are the perfect alternative. They still give you that edgier look, but show off your silhouette.
My love affair with these tattered jeans began on a little shopping trip to Ralph Lauren’s Denim & Supply a few weeks back. My mind was inundated with ideas on how to style them. That’s when you know you’re not leaving the store without buying something.
The way I see it, you can match the rest of your look to the tone of the jeans, by styling them down with a leather jacket, tee, and some sneaks. Or dress these babies up, like I did this weekend, with heels and a more minimalist top. I love the contrast created by pairing an elegant shoe and sleek sweater, with a more edgy jean and hat. Who says distressed denim can’t still create a polished look? It’s an effortless way to accomplish dressy with a casual vibe.
Have you guys bought into this distressed denim revival? How are you styling it? If you’re still waiting on the sidelines – or are looking to add to your collection – here are a few other styles I’ve got my eye on: Rag & Bone, Denim & Supply, Zara, Paige. Happy Monday!
