Finding this Monique Lhuillier gown was a little bit like how I envision finding my wedding dress will be some day. Seeing it, loving it, being a little indecisive for a hot second, and then just knowing its the one.
Courtney – of Color Me Courtney – invited me, Peter and our friend Lex to a Masquerade Ball last week, and so naturally I needed a gown. Since you know as well as I do, that there’s not an ounce of room for a full length gown in my excuse for a closet, Court and I decided to rent. I first spotted this beauty while browsing Rent the Runway‘s website before our appointment, and instantly had a crush. No, crush isn’t a strong enough word … I was lusting after it, as evidenced by my subsequent “omg – THIS!” text to Courtney.
The day before our fitting I got a call from the showroom … they rattled off the dresses that they were able to pull for me and the gorgeous “Oliva gown” was not one of them. I’ll be honest, I was a little crushed, but I knew after an hour-long appointment I’d find something else.
We got to the showroom and designer dress-up began. So many gorgeous gowns, but no Monique Lhuillier…
By some small miracle, the Oliva gown showed up in Courtney’s pile of dresses, in my size! It was a ‘stop everything I’m doing and try this dress on’ moment.
The gown was perfection. A corsetted bodice, empire waist, and voluminous bottom – with a slightly raised front hemline allowing for a stolen peek at your shoes. The black and white color-blocking made for a classic look, that was equal parts chic and princess. To say I was in love is an understatement.
Of course, then my indecisive nature kicked in…maybe I should try on other dresses, maybe this other one is better…maybe, maybe, maybe…until I snapped out of it and realized this dress is it. I’ve loved it from beginning and I’m wearing it to the ball!
A dress like this is great because its silhoutte is making enough of a statement on its own. I didn’t need much jewelry, and I only added a few pops of color to my lips, feet, and mask to create a little added flair.
It’s hard not to feel like the belle of the ball in a dress like that (see more pics from the night here), and it’s what I hope I feel like on my wedding day. Hope you all had a fabulous Halloween weekend! What did you all dress up as?
