The thing I love most about personal style, is that it’s always evolving. As a fashionista on a budget, I’m constantly experimenting with new ways to pair my existing pieces. And when I do decide to swipe my card, I love to push my boundaries a little. It keeps things interesting, while also exercising the creative side of my brain.
Mixing prints has always been a tricky beast for me. I’ve experimented and nailed it before (like this particular look), and have also had my fair share of crash and burns. Luckily, I’ve started to mentally catalogue a few rules to help me navigated the patterned waters.
1. Color commonality.
One of the easiest ways to pair contrasting prints is to keep it all in the same color family. When you have a common palette running throughout, it creates a unified look and helps make sense of everything.
2. Double up on the same print.
A common color family isn’t the only way to bring unity to your look. Dots on dots, or stripes on stripes is a fun way to play with similar patterns while still maintaining some cohesiveness in your outfit.
3. Mix print sizes.
I find that mixing a smaller print with a bigger print makes things look less overwhelming. One of my favorite combos is a thicker stripe with a smaller polka dot, like I wore today. It allows your eye to focus on the bigger print, while letting the smaller one slip by nearly unnoticed.
4. Baby steps.
You don’t need to dive head first into unchartered waters. Not everyone can mix patterns out of the gate like Color Me Courtney, but with practice and a little creativity, you can get there. Start with two patterns in one color scheme and work your way up!
5. Believe it.
Confidence is the best accessory to your patterned look. If you can rock your look with some pep in your step, others will take note.
What are some of your favorite patterns to mix? Go and experiment!
