Dang it, if I knew we were going to SoHo I would have dressed for SoHo.
Yes – this is a real quote heard on the streets of New York. No – I did not say it. Yes – I may or may not have thought the same thing at one point or another …
Dress: Zara (similar) | Sandals: Aldo (similar) | Bag: Rebecca Minkoff c/o | Necklace: Aldo (on sale!) | Sunnies: Coach (want these!) | Watch: Marc Jacobs | Bracelets: Stella & Dot + Kate Spade (striped version)
Different neighborhoods of NYC have different personalities and vibes … just like your fashion. Now, that doesn’t mean you should feel pressured to step outside yourself to dress a certain way just to fit in there. That’s silly. But you can flex your style muscles and have a little fun.
Just remember — you should always dress for you, not for anyone (or anywhere) else. Yes, people in SoHo love to wear black … all black … all the time. But if that’s not your thing, you don’t have to bust out the leather pants and v-neck tee to head down there. On the other hand, you can’t be afraid to take some risks. Try some new things. Allow yourself to push your own sartorial limits sometimes. Who knows, maybe you’ll find out you can pull off leather pants like a rock star. I personally am more of a black sundresses and gladiator sandals kind of SoHo gal in the summer, but hey – you do you!
You aren’t being untrue to yourself by taking a risk. We all have different parts of our personality, just like New York City. Some days I’m feeling girly and preppy. Other days I’m feeling like I need a little edge. Cue the high heels, red lips and the leopard print. These style personalities are all part of who you are. Let yourself be multi-dimensional. In fact, encourage it.
There are lots of different neighborhoods in NYC, each with their own personality. But in the end, they are all still part of New York.
