Not that I ever need a reason to rock some nautical stripes, but hanging out by the water on America’s birthday is as good an excuse as ever!
Nautical style has been a part of our culture for well over a century, and really evokes a powerful blend of sporty elegance. At it’s core, its simple: white + navy (preferably in the form of stripes). But if you’re looking to ‘splash’ (see what I did there) a little more excitement onto your look, try using a few of these tips:
Sweater: Banana Republic (similar) | Short: Gap (similar) | Hat: street vendor (love this) | Bag: Elaine Turner | Watch: Marc Jacobs | Bracelets: Stella & Dot + Stella & Dot | Shoes: Toms
- Add a pop of color. Red is the natural first choice, so why not mix it up with an unexpected accent like yellow, orange or turquoise?
- Throw in a contrasting pattern. Whether it’s in the form of a scarf or a bag, try complimenting your nautical stripes with another print. I’m partial to polka dots, but you also shouldn’t be afraid to double down on the stripes (like I did in today’s look).
- Anchors away! Literally. Put them away. We get that your look is maritime-inspired, but the huge anchor across your chest is overkill. Keep the anchor motifs modest and understated. Maybe try incorporating them with a dainty bracelet or small print.
Remember – you don’t need to be seaside to wear your naval-inspired outfit. This all-American look fares just as well on land, and can be worn in any season.
