Last week I shared one of my weaknesses as a fashion-loving New Yorker … buying clothes for no reason (read my confession here!). A close cousin of that problem, is my habit of buying things “so I can take it home and decide later”. Because, you know, you can always return it.
Does anyone else run this conversation through their head before checkout? TELL me I’m not the only one. But let’s be honest, I would say a good 9 times out of 10 the item(s) never get returned. Maybe it’s laziness, but more likely it’s a way for us to momentarily appease our conscious — it’s okay because I MIGHT return this … swipes card.
Dress: J.Crew | Hat: street vendor | Sandals: Aldo | Bag; Rebecca Minkoff c/o | Bracelet: Kate Spade | Watch: Marc Jacobs
This sunny little sundress was my latest “you-can-always-just-return-it” purchase. I was shopping for an outfit for the Saratoga trip, and J.Crew was my first stop. My eyes locked on this dress from the minute I walked in, but of course, I couldn’t commit to a dress after only one store! What if miss out on a better dress? So I bought it and continued shopping…
Sure enough, I did find more than one dress that I liked … and frankly, more than one pair of shoes (whoops!). And two days later, when I was looking for something to wear, it seemed much more appealing to wear a new pretty dress than something old from my closet.
And that’s how it happens … every time.
I love versatility in a dress. Initially I envisioned dressing this one up with heels and a clutch, and I’d be off to the races! But when Sunday rolled around and Peter and I were in the mood to just run out for coffee and croissants, I dialed it back with a pair of gladiator sandals and my trusty panama hat. I could have made this look even more boho with an oversized bag, but my classy little Rebecca Minkoff kept me feeling feminine and pulled together.
So tell me, are my shopping habits problematic? Tell me I’m not flying solo on this sartorial struggle. Let me know … I’m happy to start a support group :-P We can go shopping afterwards! Wait….dang it.
