Fact: I fancy myself as an outfit planner. Not quite “lay your outfits out the night before” level, but I’m guilty of mentally styling my looks ahead of time. Prepping for fashion week was no different. I did all my shopping ahead of time, curating what I thought was the perfect collection of weather appropriate pre-fall looks, and couldn’t wait to take them for a spin.
But for all the wardrobe planning I did, I failed to research one key variable — the weather. And of course, all my plans went out the window on day one when I woke up to pouring rain with no lapse in sight. Guess I’ll save that all white look for another day…
Jumpsuit: H&M | Blazer: Forever 21 | Shoes: Ivanka Trump | Bag: Prada | Watch: Caravelle c/o | Bracelet: The Peachbox c/o
Now I was stressed. On top of the undeniable amount of pressure to wear expensive designers to every show, I now had to pull something together from my closet last minute. For a select few, wearing labels is status quo. But for the rest of us on a wardrobe budget, it may be a little less realistic. That’s why I say — fake it ’til you make it! That doesn’t mean buying knockoff designer pieces. But it does mean creating an overall look that exudes high fashion without the price tag.
Forced to look deep into my closet for an acceptable alternative, I turned to my trusty black jumpsuit as my new outfit base. I tried to use cut and color to my advantage as a way to achieve that desired high-end look. Black, being chic and timeless, will always have a place in the fashion community. I paired it with an asymmetric burgundy blazer for an edgy yet sophisticated vibe, and echoed the pop of color on my feet and lips for the full effect.
Here’s the best part. The jumpsuit? H&M. Blazer? From Forever 21! And yet, when paired with my designer bag and a pair of sassy shoes, I look runway-ready. Or at least, ready to watch the runway.
Looking the part doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank. I frequently pair together bargain buys with my favorite designer pieces. If you accessorize your look with confidence, and strut into that show like a runway model, then no one will think twice! Fake it ’til you make it.
I can’t wait to see the look on peoples’ faces when they ask you “who are you wearing?” :-)
