Think Before You Swipe

A New York Love Affair :: Burgundy Dress

Last month I had the opportunity to speak at the Fall Lovely Happenings Event. I thought long and hard about what insights I wanted to share with a room full of fabulous ladies, and decided on something I know we all struggle with: getting the most out of your existing wardrobe.

Because you know as well as I do, the fashion rut problem is real … very real. And we’ve all had those moments where we’re staring into our overflowing closets with nothing to wear. The temptation in that moment to go out and buy something new is strong. Fight it! But if you ask me, the problem starts before we even swipe our credit cards in the store.

The problem is we don’t think ahead when we’re shopping. We go to our favorite stores with nothing specific in mind and scoop up whatever catches our eye! I know I do at least… Not only can this become expensive, but further exacerbates the fashion rut problem. We buy something, wear it once, and it’s back to having nothing to wear!

To combat this, I try to do a little research first. Scope out the trends I’m liking, the staples I need, and come up with a game plan. Let’s say I am only going to allow myself 5 new things for the season – well those 5 things better be really versatile! Before I swipe the plastic, I ask myself if I can think of at least 3 different ways to style the piece with my current wardrobe. Whether it’s a trend or not, it’s important to bring pieces into your wardrobe that serve more than one purpose.

Take this gorgeous Karen Millen dress for example. I splurged a little bit on this number for a wedding last month. But I was completely okay spending the money on this high quality piece because I could think of at least 3-4 different ways I wanted to style it!

The above one is perfect for the office or a classy occasion. I doubled tripled down on my love for burgundy, creating a full-on monochromatic look. You can easily swap out the pumps for black over the knee boots, and add a blazer or shawl, and voila! you’ve transitioned this look into the winter months.

Looking to take this dress out for an edgier spin? Add leather and lace ups and you’re ready for a night on the town. Burgundy is a great alternative to red, because it makes a statement without being too va va room. And I love pairing it with black for dramatic effect, but it pairs equally well with grey and soft pinks if you’re looking to achieve a more feminine look.

So next time your shopping … think before you swipe. That way you’ll have more options when you’re staring into the bottomless closet with nothing to wear!

Such a good tip to think before buying! It’s totally easier said than done but we’re all guilty. I try to imagine outfits I could build around whatever piece I pick up and want to buy, sometimes that helps me unless it’s like really too pretty to put back or on sale!

These are great tips! With online shopping/browsing I have found I am much pickier because I can see all my options and the different price points on an item before buying something.
